Celeste’s laptop contained divorce papers for Ethan and Amelia.
Ethan had never seen the final version.
The agreement transferred Amelia’s supposed “minor family investments” to Ethan as compensation for reputational damage caused by the ring theft.
A separate contract appointed Ethan global president after the Northstar sale.
Six months later, another document allowed Celeste to remove him for misconduct.
Helena and Celeste planned to use Ethan twice.
First, as the spouse who publicly discredited Amelia.
Then as the executive who absorbed blame after the sale.
Ethan read the documents in silence.
“You were going to fire me?”
Celeste answered through counsel.
“You were becoming unpredictable.”
He looked at Amelia.
For the first time, he understood how it felt to be reduced to a function.
