Thomas Learns to Wait

Chapter 13 - Thomas Learns to Wait
Thomas wanted to rebuild his relationship with Helena quickly.
He offered a new home, private therapists, and control of every family account.
Helena declined.
She moved into an accessible apartment chosen with an independent occupational therapist.
The doors were wide.
The counters adjusted.
The building had reliable elevators and no Beaumont name above the entrance.
Thomas visited once a week when invited.
During the first visit, he asked whether Helena wanted help transferring from her wheelchair.
She said no.
He waited.
That small pause mattered more than the expensive equipment he had offered.
Thomas also met Eli under advocate supervision.
He apologized for funding the contractor that lost him in false records.
Eli asked:
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Should you have known?”
“Yes.”
Thomas began financing record repair, but the money entered an independent restitution fund.
He held no naming rights.
The first housing project opened without a bronze Beaumont plaque.
Friends told him he was erasing his family legacy.
Thomas replied:
“Accurate records are not erasure.”

He never stopped feeling guilt.
He learned not to make Helena, Rachel, or Eli manage it for him.
