The Patch Under the Blanket

Chapter 06 - The Patch Under the Blanket
Independent specialists examined Helena.
They removed the silver patch under controlled conditions and monitored her safely.
The medication gradually left her system.
Sensation returned unevenly.
She could move both feet and briefly support weight with assistance. Her spinal injury remained real. Recovery would require time, therapy, and uncertainty.
Doctors refused to promise she would walk independently.
Helena appreciated the honesty.
For years, Marcus had offered certainty in every direction.
Certain paralysis.
Certain dependence.
Certain danger if she questioned him.
Now uncertainty felt like freedom.
The patch logs showed that medication levels increased before board meetings, medical reviews, and public appearances.
Whenever Helena reported tingling or movement, Marcus raised the dose.
He then entered notes describing “phantom sensation associated with denial.”
Her body had attempted to report progress.
Her husband converted progress into pathology.
Rachel explained that the device was originally designed to reduce severe spasms temporarily after surgery.
It was never approved for continuous use.
Marcus altered the software so the patch appeared to be a passive circulation monitor.
The company selling the devices belonged to a Vale holding firm.
Beaumont Trust paid for them.
The same patch had been used on ninety-two patients.
Some may have needed the medication legitimately.
Others had never given informed consent.
The state ordered an immediate review.
Helena asked that no patient’s device be removed abruptly without medical supervision.
“Do not turn exposure into another decision made over someone’s body.”
The review team included patients, nurses, pharmacists, and independent neurologists.

Rachel joined only after choosing to.
She was not required to become the permanent expert simply because she survived the system.
