Eli Returns to the Lion Ballroom

Chapter 18 - Eli Returns to the Lion Ballroom
At sixteen, Eli applied for a youth seat on the Beaumont patient-and-worker board.
He used the same public application as every other student.
The committee rejected him the first year because another applicant had stronger community-organizing experience.
Thomas worried the rejection would humiliate him.
Eli shrugged.
“A fair system can say no.”
He applied again the following year after working with a school record-rights project.
This time, he was elected.
His first proposal required foster youth to receive independent copies of medical and identity records before any placement transfer.
The board revised and approved it.
Eli served one term.
He did not become the foundation’s permanent young hero.
After graduation, he studied social work and education policy.
At the annual meeting, he stood beneath the chandeliers where adults once stared at his clothing.
He wore a simple navy suit.
Rachel sat beside Helena.

The chair introduced him by name and current work.
