The Fall from the Balcony

Chapter 05 - The Fall from the Balcony
Helena’s accident occurred during a Beaumont Foundation retreat.
She remembered stepping onto a balcony outside the library.
She remembered arguing with Marcus about missing rehabilitation money.
Then the railing gave way.
Investigators had called it structural failure.
The new evidence reopened the case.
A maintenance report showed loose bolts had been discovered two days before the fall. The repair order was canceled by Victor Shaw, the Beaumont family attorney.
Victor said Marcus requested privacy during the retreat.
Marcus denied knowing about the railing.
No evidence yet proved anyone intended Helena to fall.
The financial motive was clearer.
Before the accident, Helena planned to separate the Mobility Trust from Vale Institute.
She discovered that the institute billed the trust for thousands of therapy sessions never provided.
Some patients existed under duplicate identities.
Others were listed as permanently disabled after recovering enough to leave care.
Long-term classifications generated larger payments and justified continued guardianship.
Helena intended to present the audit to the board.
The accident silenced the meeting.
Her medical classification then placed Marcus in control of her proxy votes.
Thomas asked why Helena never told him about the audit.
“I tried,” she said.
“You told me marriage was making you emotional and that Marcus understood the medical side better.”
Thomas remembered the conversation.
Helena had been angry and frightened.
He interpreted both as marital stress.
He advised her to rest.
After the fall, Thomas accepted Marcus’s authority because he was a respected neurologist.
Trust had become a way of avoiding questions that might break the family.
Helena looked at her father.
“You saw a wheelchair and stopped asking what happened before it.”
Thomas did not defend himself.
“Yes.”

The admission did not repair four years.
It created the first honest record of his role.
