The Institute Below the Garden

Chapter 04 - The Institute Below the Garden

Vale Recovery Institute stood on twelve acres outside the city.

Its public buildings contained bright therapy gyms, gardens, and private suites for wealthy patients.

The map from Rachel’s badge pointed beneath the oldest garden pavilion.

Marcus claimed no lower level existed.

Thomas produced the original construction plans.

A service floor had been built for water treatment and emergency power. Renovation documents later described it as permanently sealed.

Ortiz obtained a warrant before dawn.

Independent doctors, patient advocates, and state investigators entered the institute.

The garden pavilion elevator required an executive biometric code.

Marcus’s thumbprint opened it.

Below ground, investigators found a private neurological ward with eight rooms.

No windows.

No public patient registry.

Rachel occupied Room Six under the name Rebecca Lane.

She was alive.

She had been kept under a court-ordered medical guardianship supported by reports from Dr. Paul Mercer, Marcus’s uncle.

The records described paranoid delusions, identity confusion, and violent fixation on Helena Beaumont.

Raw camera footage showed Rachel calmly requesting a lawyer.

Her requests were entered as evidence of obsession.

Rachel had managed to reactivate the paired badge by repairing a transmitter hidden inside an old nurse-call unit.

She knew the gala merger would give Marcus control of Beaumont’s patient-safety patents and allow him to destroy the original patch records.

Rachel had one chance to signal Eli.

The underground ward held seven other people.

A former engineer who challenged a defective implant.

A patient advocate who discovered altered consent forms.

Two relatives of wealthy donors placed under private guardianships.

Three former Vale employees.

Each person had information that threatened someone benefiting from the institute.

The ward did not rely on chains.

Legal documents, controlled medication, and sealed communication were enough.

When Rachel saw Eli through the consultation-room glass, she covered her mouth.

He stood behind an advocate, unsure whether to enter.

Rachel opened both hands.

He crossed the room when he chose.

Helena watched remotely from an independent hospital.

She did not turn the reunion into proof of her own rescue.

Rachel and Eli had lost three years.

Their story belonged to them.
