Rachel Returns to Nursing

Chapter 14 - Rachel Returns to Nursing
Rachel’s license had expired during her confinement.
The state offered immediate restoration.
She requested a full competency review instead.
“I want the same independent standards I asked for everyone else.”
She completed supervised training and returned to rehabilitation nursing part-time.
Her first position was not at Beaumont Foundation.
She chose a community hospital where the staff knew her as Rachel, not as the famous whistleblower from the gala.
Patients sometimes recognized her.
She declined to discuss Helena’s private treatment.
Rachel also struggled at home.
She wanted to protect Eli from every risk.
After losing three years, ordinary school trips felt dangerous.
Eli’s therapist helped them create agreements rather than restrictions.
He shared his location during long travel.
Rachel did not read every message.
They rebuilt family life through grocery lists, missed alarms, homework, and arguments about bedtime.
The reunion remained meaningful.
It was not perfect.
Rachel kept the silver badge in a drawer.
Eli no longer needed to wear it.
One evening, he asked whether she regretted sending him to find Helena.
Rachel answered:
“I regret that a child had to carry evidence adults should have protected.”
Eli nodded.

He had been brave.
He should never have needed to be.
