The Letter from Marcus

Chapter 17 - The Letter from Marcus
Five years into his sentence, Marcus wrote to Helena through a court-approved program.
The first letter blamed Victor and the pressure of preserving Vale Institute.
The program did not forward it.
The second named his choices.
He admitted increasing the patch dosage after Helena reported movement.
He admitted dismissing Rachel because her documentation threatened the merger.
He admitted enjoying the authority that came from being the only person who could explain Helena’s body to her family.
He wrote:
I told myself certainty comforted you. In truth, certainty made you easier to govern.
Helena read the letter with her counselor.
Marcus asked whether she might someday speak with him.
She did not respond.
Later, he provided device codes that helped identify additional patients.
The information mattered.

When reporters asked whether she forgave him, she answered:

“My future is not a treatment plan for his remorse.”
After that, she declined the question.
