Rachel Reed’s Last Shift

Chapter 03 - Rachel Reed’s Last Shift
Rachel Reed had been Helena’s night nurse during the first year after the balcony fall.
She was direct, impatient with self-pity, and careful about every medical detail. Helena trusted her more than any specialist at Vale Institute.
Rachel believed the spinal injury was incomplete.
She recorded small responses in Helena’s feet and lower legs. She requested independent imaging and a second neurological opinion.
Marcus refused.
He said too much hope could become psychologically harmful.
Rachel continued documenting.
One night, Helena woke and found Rachel arguing with Marcus outside the therapy room.
“You changed the sensor settings,” Rachel said.
Marcus answered, “You are outside your role.”
“My role is the patient.”
The following morning, Rachel was dismissed for stealing medication.
Security footage supposedly showed her entering the pharmacy.
Helena accepted the explanation after Marcus displayed a signed confession.
Rachel vanished two weeks later.
A county report said she drove into a flooded river during a storm. Her vehicle was recovered, but no verified remains were found.
Eli had been seven.
He entered foster care under the name Eli Carter after officials claimed no relatives could be located.
For three years, he moved between homes and shelters.
Six months earlier, a retired nurse named Rosa Martinez found him at a church meal program. She recognized Rachel’s eyes in his face and gave him the silver badge.
Rachel had left instructions with Rosa:
If the crescent light activates, take Eli to Helena Beaumont.
The badge remained dark until the morning of the gala.
Eli left the temporary shelter and traveled across the city alone. He walked the final six miles after losing his bus money.
The mud on his clothing came from crossing a construction lot behind the Beaumont Hotel because the main entrance guards refused to let him near the gala.
Thomas listened without interrupting.
His company sponsored the foster contractor that lost track of Eli.
His hotel security turned the boy away.
His foundation employed the people Rachel feared.
Every institution carrying the Beaumont name had stood between the child and the woman he was trying to reach.
Helena asked Eli why the badge activated.
He pressed the crescent symbol.
A map appeared on the gala screen.
The signal came from beneath the Vale Institute itself.

Rachel Reed’s badge was still communicating with another device.
Someone wearing its paired transmitter was alive.
