The Bulldozers at the Gate

Chapter 13 - The Bulldozers at the Gate
Three bulldozers blocked the river road.
Their permits claimed the skatepark posed an immediate public hazard after Lena’s injury.
The city official who signed the order had received campaign donations from Grant’s real-estate partners.
Officer Ruiz stood in front of the gate.
“You do not enter an active evidence site.”
The demolition supervisor showed her a court-stamped document.
Detective Brooks called the judge.
The order was genuine.
Grant had filed the emergency petition before the hearing.
Even suspended, he still controlled Vale Urban Partners.
Daniel searched Maria’s real land deed.
A clause prohibited demolition without approval from two independent youth trustees.
No youth trustees had ever been appointed.
Grant intentionally left the positions vacant.
Eli raised his hand.
“Maria picked them.”
He remembered a ceremony when he was six. Maria gave two children brass skateboard bearings and called them “keepers of the park.”
One was Lena.
The other was Nathan Vale’s younger cousin, Zoe, who later moved away.
The bearings were not symbolic.
Each contained a micro-engraved trustee key.
Lena still wore hers on a necklace.
Claire contacted Zoe, now a college student studying urban planning. She joined by video and confirmed Maria explained the responsibility to her family.
The demolition order lacked both approvals.
The judge issued a temporary stay.
Bulldozers remained at the gate but could not enter.
Grant left the hearing before reporters could surround him.
His car was later found near the river with the driver door open.
Police believed he fled.
Margaret disagreed.
“Grant never leaves a stage before the ending he planned.”
The foundation’s main donation account emptied overnight.
Twenty-four million dollars moved to a private bank.
Claire’s access was disabled.
Grant had prepared an escape fund.
Daniel returned to the skatepark after midnight.
The broken helmet sat inside the evidence tent.
He noticed a new scratch near the ventilation slot.
Someone had accessed it after the hearing.
The copper archive bridge was missing.
Grant did not only flee with money.
He took the device capable of authenticating the helmet footage.
Without it, his lawyers could argue every video was altered.
A security camera showed Grant entering the evidence tent disguised as a paramedic.
He left through the river tunnel.

The tunnel connected to the abandoned ferry terminal where Vale Urban Partners planned a luxury development.
Grant’s final stage waited underground.
