Grant Vale Without the Cameras

Chapter 15 - Grant Vale Without the Cameras

Grant’s criminal trial lasted four months.

He faced charges related to fraud, illegal surveillance, evidence destruction, insurance schemes, and conspiracies surrounding Nathan, Maria, and Lena.

His attorneys argued that Paul Mercer acted independently.

Paul testified otherwise.

Claire testified.

Margaret testified.

Lena testified from the same blue helmet camera Grant tried to weaponize.

Daniel testified last.

The defense attorney displayed photographs of the foundation’s clinics, parks, and scholarship recipients.

“Did Grant Vale help children?”

“Yes.”

“Then this was not a fraudulent organization.”

Daniel looked at the jury.

“Good work does not become a receipt that pays for hidden harm.”

The prosecutor played Grant’s ferry-terminal statement.

“They are patterns.”

The jury heard his voice without music, logos, or children arranged behind him.

Grant chose to speak before sentencing.

He described Nathan’s death and said grief changed him.

Margaret watched from the first row.

“You changed grief,” she said quietly. “You turned it into permission.”

The judge imposed a sentence that ensured Grant would spend most of his remaining life in prison.

Paul received a reduced sentence for cooperation.

Several city officials and foundation trustees were charged separately.

Vantage Youth Systems paid a massive settlement and surrendered its databases.

Every family received the right to destroy or reclaim its files.

Some parents chose deletion.

Others preserved footage as evidence.

Daniel watched Grant leave the courtroom without cameras waiting outside.

For a man who lived through an audience, that absence seemed like the first punishment he fully understood.
