The Mother Who Kept the Original

Chapter 08 - The Mother Who Kept the Original
Margaret Vale brought a locked metal case.
Inside was Nathan’s original helmet.
She had taken it from the hospital before Grant could destroy it.
The shell carried a crack pattern nearly identical to Lena’s.
A copper archive bridge remained inside the vent.
Margaret also kept Nathan’s handwritten journal.
He described his father’s plan to close the park after an “unavoidable safety incident” and sell the riverfront land. Grant’s first scheme failed because Nathan’s death created too much scrutiny.
Twenty years later, he tried again at Riverton.
“Why didn’t you go to police?” Daniel asked.
“I did.”
Margaret named the detective, prosecutor, and foundation lawyer who dismissed her.
All three later received donations from Grant.
She spent years fighting until Grant obtained a restraining order portraying her as unstable.
“I learned that a grieving mother is believable only while she says what powerful people expect.”
Detective Brooks sent both helmets to an independent federal laboratory.
The impact damage had been created by the same type of steel punch.
Blue resin found on Nathan’s half-pipe railing matched the modern compound at Riverton.
Paul Mercer had repeated the method.
Grant was not improvising.
He was reenacting the crime that built his legend.
Margaret agreed to testify.
That night, someone broke into her hotel room.
Nothing valuable was taken.
Nathan’s journal disappeared.
Security footage showed a woman wearing a Vale Foundation volunteer jacket.
She removed her hood near the elevator.
Daniel recognized Claire Vale, Grant’s adult daughter and the foundation’s chief financial officer.
Claire had publicly defended her father for years.
Detectives arrested her at the airport.
She claimed she took the journal to protect Margaret from fabricated pages Grant planned to insert.
Inside Claire’s suitcase, officers found the original Riverton land deed.
Maria’s real signature appeared on every page.
There was no safety-transfer amendment.
Claire asked to speak with Daniel alone.
“My father will burn the foundation before he lets anyone see the full accounts,” she said.
“Why help him this long?”
“Because he told me Nathan died because my mother distracted him.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Grant had raised his daughter on another lie.
Claire handed Daniel a key.
“It opens the archive in his private office.”

“What is inside?”
“The reason Maria was killed.”
