The Server Under the Bowl

Chapter 07 - The Server Under the Bowl
The tunnel ended beneath the deepest section of the skatepark.
Behind a steel maintenance panel stood a climate-controlled data room filled with servers.
Each rack bore the Vantage Youth Systems logo.
Detective Brooks photographed everything before technicians disconnected the network.
Folders were organized by child name.
Medical history.
School attendance.
Family income.
Fear responses.
Private conversations recorded through helmet microphones.
The foundation had collected intimate data on more than four thousand children across seven cities.
One folder was labeled CARTER, MARIA.
It contained years of surveillance.
Grant had monitored Daniel’s wife before her death.
Another folder was labeled VALE, NATHAN.
The files dated back twenty years.
Daniel opened the oldest video.
Sixteen-year-old Nathan Vale sat inside an unfinished skatepark office. He wore a prototype helmet and spoke directly to its camera.
“My dad keeps moving grant money into the river project. He says the park is only useful until the zoning changes.”
Nathan had discovered Grant’s first land scheme.
A later video showed Grant confronting him.
“You owe everything to this family,” Grant said.
Nathan replied, “Kids are not props.”
The final file recorded the day Nathan died.
Paul Mercer, then a young security contractor, loosened bolts on the half-pipe railing. Grant watched from a distance.
Nathan fell after confronting them.
The footage ended when the helmet struck the concrete.
Grant had built a youth foundation around the death he helped cause.
His grief was real.
So was his crime.
Daniel felt sick.
Detectives secured the server room.
Before they could copy the archive, smoke poured from the ceiling vents.
A remote fire-suppression override released oxygen instead of inert gas. Flames moved along the cable trays.
Grant had installed a self-destruct system.
Daniel grabbed the Nathan drive.
Brooks pulled him toward the tunnel.
A rack collapsed behind them.
They escaped seconds before the data room filled with fire.
Most servers were damaged.
The single drive Daniel carried might contain the only surviving record of the foundation’s first crime.
Grant’s attorneys immediately claimed chain-of-custody violations.
They argued Daniel had planted the files.
Nathan’s own mother, Margaret Vale, appeared at the police station.
She had divorced Grant after their son’s death and disappeared from public life.

When she saw the video, she did not cry.
She said, “I have been waiting twenty years for someone else to hear his voice.”
