The Ferry Terminal

Chapter 14 - The Ferry Terminal
The ferry terminal had been closed for twelve years.
Its upper level held broken ticket booths and rusted signs. Beneath it, construction crews had installed a private data center for the future luxury complex.
Grant stood among the servers holding the copper archive bridge.
He called Daniel.
“Come alone if you want the evidence preserved.”
Daniel told Detective Brooks.
She allowed him to go while officers entered through a service tunnel.
Grant waited beside a projection screen.
“I knew you would find the wall drive,” he said.
“You wanted me to?”
“I wanted to know how much Maria copied.”
“You killed her because she knew.”
“I tried to stop a meeting.”
“You keep using smaller words for the same choices.”
Grant activated the screen.
Video from hundreds of helmets appeared.
Children laughing.
Crying.
Confessing fears.
Talking about parents, teachers, and friends.
“This data is worth more than the land,” Grant said. “Predictive behavior is the future.”
“They are children.”
“They are patterns.”
Daniel understood what Grant truly protected.
Not the foundation.
Not Nathan’s memory.
A business model built from turning vulnerable lives into private property.
Grant held the archive bridge above a server destruction slot.
“If I drop this, authentication ends.”
“Your daughter gave us the accounts.”
“My daughter has always confused guilt with morality.”
“You taught her that.”
Grant’s hand shook.
For the first time, Daniel saw exhaustion beneath the performance.
“Nathan was supposed to be frightened,” Grant said. “He was not supposed to fall.”
“And after he did?”
“I built something.”
“You built a monument that kept making the same child fall.”
Grant looked at the screen.
Nathan’s video appeared among the files.
Daniel had transmitted a copy into the system from Maria’s archive.
Nathan spoke directly to his father:
“If something happens to me, it won’t make you the victim.”
Grant stared.
His grip loosened.
Paul had hidden that final clip from him for twenty years.
Detective Brooks entered behind the servers.
Grant turned toward the river exit.
Daniel caught his arm.
The archive bridge fell.
It struck the concrete but did not break.
Officers arrested Grant beneath the image of his son.

No cheering followed.
Only the sound of servers continuing to copy the truth.
