Maria’s Last Inspection

Chapter 06 - Maria’s Last Inspection

The dashboard footage did not show the collision itself.

It showed enough to reopen the case.

Maria had called Daniel twenty minutes before she died. He remembered her saying she discovered “a second contract” and needed to speak with the trust attorney.

Police had treated the phrase as unrelated business.

Now investigators searched the damaged car stored in an insurance yard.

A mechanic found a wireless control device attached to the steering assist module. The component had been installed after the vehicle’s last service.

The service company belonged to Vale Urban Partners.

Grant denied involvement.

He called the footage misleading and accused Daniel of exploiting his wife’s death to avoid responsibility for Lena’s injury.

Public opinion divided.

Some people saw a whistleblower.

Others saw a grieving husband creating conspiracies.

Grant appeared on television wearing the same Youth Foundation shirt from the park. He spoke about his late son, Nathan, who died in a skateboarding accident twenty years earlier.

“I built this foundation so no parent would experience what I did,” he said.

The story had made him famous.

Daniel searched old records.

Nathan Vale died at sixteen after falling from an unfinished half-pipe. Grant later claimed there was no helmet available.

But the original paramedic report said Nathan wore a helmet.

The helmet disappeared from evidence.

Maria had investigated the death before partnering with Grant.

Her last inspection notebook contained a drawing of a helmet vent and the words:

N.V. DEVICE STILL ACTIVE.

Daniel realized Maria knew the current smart helmets were based on an older prototype.

Grant had tested the first hidden camera system on his own son.

Nathan may have recorded something before his death.

Lena’s helmet used the same contact layout.

The copper device Daniel saw inside the vent was not simply a camera. It was a storage bridge designed to copy footage to a remote archive whenever the helmet came near a foundation access point.

Even without the memory card, a second copy might exist.

Daniel and Detective Brooks searched the skatepark network closet.

The archive server was gone.

A cable led underground toward the old stormwater tunnel beneath the bowl.

Eli watched from the fence.

“I know where it goes,” he said.

Children used the tunnel as a secret shortcut until the foundation sealed it.

Lena once told him lights still blinked behind the wall.

Daniel opened the access grate.

Cool air rose from the darkness.

Somewhere below the park, Grant Vale had built a room no safety plan showed.
