The Staff Band Comes Off

Chapter 20 - The Staff Band Comes Off

Ten years after Lena’s fall, Riverton hosted a safety festival.

No giant foundation logo hung above the entrance.

The program listed hundreds of contributors in equal type.

Daniel was forty-nine and beginning to turn gray. He still checked the bolts before sunrise.

At noon, a nervous twelve-year-old girl approached the largest bowl wearing an orange trainee band.

She had volunteered to help inspect equipment but froze when reporters arrived.

Daniel recognized the fear.

He knelt beside her.

“You can take the band off.”

“Will I get in trouble?”

“No. A uniform should tell people how to help you. It should never decide whether you are allowed to speak.”

She removed it and placed it on the bench.

Together, they checked the coping.

Clean.

Dry.

Secure.

At the opening ceremony, Lena held the original cracked helmet.

She did not display it as a symbol of damage.

She opened the liner and showed the empty space where the hidden camera had been.

“This space belongs to the wearer now,” she said.

Eli demonstrated the public impact system. Every reading appeared anonymously on a screen controlled by the youth council.

Margaret unveiled a small plaque for Nathan and Maria.

It did not call them heroes.

It said:

THEY ASKED WHO THE PARK WAS FOR.

CHILDREN KEPT ANSWERING.

After the crowd left, Daniel walked to the start line where Grant once threw the helmet.

The concrete had been resurfaced, but he remembered the sound.

He took the old STAFF band from the archive for one final inspection. The orange fabric had faded. The tracking chip no longer worked.

Daniel placed it beside the helmet again.

The objects had once been used to control a story.

Now they taught children how control worked.

From the bowl, boards rolled across concrete. Wheels struck coping. Someone laughed after a harmless fall.

Daniel listened.

No speeches.

No cameras turning pain into donations.

Only a park doing what Maria designed it to do.

A boy called for Coach Dan to check a loose wheel.

Daniel closed the archive case and went to help.
