The Girl in the Hospital Bed

Chapter 05 - The Girl in the Hospital Bed

Lena woke shortly after midnight.

Her first question was not about her arm.

“Did Eli get the card out?”

Rosa began crying.

Daniel stood near the doorway while Detective Maya Brooks recorded Lena’s statement.

Lena had volunteered in the foundation office for a school service project. She noticed donor reports listing hundreds of helmets the park never received. She copied invoices and followed the vendor addresses.

Vantage Youth Systems did not manufacture safety equipment.

It purchased behavioral data.

The hidden cameras recorded children’s faces, conversations, emotional reactions, and peer relationships. The foundation sold the data to marketing companies and predictive-policing contractors.

Lena confronted Grant during the ribbon-cutting rehearsal.

“He said nobody listens to kids until something terrible happens,” she said.

“Then Paul put the damaged helmet in my locker.”

“Why did you wear it?” Daniel asked.

“They said Eli would lose his therapy scholarship if I caused trouble.”

Eli had struggled with anxiety since their father left. The foundation paid for counseling.

Grant used it as leverage.

Lena removed the memory card but did not know the shell had been weakened. At the top of the bowl, she felt her board slide sideways. The resin on the rail caused the fall.

“I heard Mr. Vale tell someone to make sure Coach Dan signed the closure report.”

Daniel looked away.

Lena reached for his hand.

“You always checked everything. That’s why they needed you gone.”

Detective Brooks asked where Lena hid the copied invoices.

“In Maria’s old workshop.”

The workshop had been sealed since Daniel’s wife died.

Lena found the key taped beneath a bench at the skatepark. Maria had left instructions for young volunteers to report missing safety equipment.

Daniel had never known.

He drove to the workshop with police.

The lock had been forced.

Cabinets stood open. Computers were gone. Papers covered the floor.

On the wall, someone had spray-painted:

ACCIDENTS HAPPEN.

Daniel recognized the phrase.

Grant said it at Maria’s funeral.

Police found a blue resin footprint beside the rear door.

They also found a damaged dashboard camera beneath a shelf.

The memory card remained inside.

The final recording showed Maria on the highway two years earlier.

A black foundation SUV moved beside her car.

Paul Mercer was driving.

Grant sat in the passenger seat.

Maria looked toward them seconds before her steering failed.

Her death had never been an accident.
