Noah’s Question

Chapter 14 - Noah’s Question

At school, children called Noah’s father the soldier who came back from the dead.

Noah disliked the phrase.

Daniel had not returned from death.

He had returned from records that said he was dead.

One evening, Noah asked:

“Did the flag lie?”

Daniel considered the question.

“Cloth cannot lie.”

“The people who brought it thought you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then what does it mean?”

Daniel unfolded the flag with Sarah at the kitchen table.

They showed Noah the blue paper star and the place where the memory card had been hidden.

“It means people believed I died while serving,” Daniel said. “It also carried the message that helped you find me.”

Noah asked whether they should display it.

The family decided to keep it in a wooden case with the star visible beside it.

The casualty certificate did not appear.

The corrected service record did.

The case belonged in their home, not a museum.

Years later, if Noah chose differently, that choice would be his too.
