The Corrected Memorial

Chapter 17 - The Corrected Memorial
Daniel’s name had been added to a regional memorial wall after his death certificate was issued.
The Army offered to remove it quietly.
Daniel refused a silent correction.
He asked for a new plaque explaining that official records had falsely listed him as deceased and that the error helped expose a contractor fraud system.
Some officials worried the language would damage trust.
Daniel answered:
“Trust is damaged by hiding corrections, not by making them.”
The memorial committee approved a revised entry.
Daniel attended the ceremony privately with Sarah and Noah.
Families of genuinely fallen service members stood nearby.
Daniel did not present himself as equivalent to them.
He had survived.
