The Man on the Airfield

Chapter 05 - The Man on the Airfield

The aircraft began moving before investigators reached the runway.

A federal vehicle blocked the taxiway.

Blackridge security argued that the passengers were medical patients requiring overseas treatment.

Avery demanded access.

The attending physician presented court orders declaring all three patients incapable of identifying themselves.

The orders were signed by Judge Evelyn Grant, whose husband sat on Blackridge’s board.

Investigators boarded under emergency authority.

Daniel lay in the second medical berth.

His eyes opened when Marcus spoke his name.

“Captain Mitchell?”

Daniel looked at the lieutenant, then toward the doorway.

“Sarah?”

“She’s safe. Noah is safe.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The other patients were Sergeant Luis Alvarez and civilian medic Rebecca Chen, both listed as dead after separate Blackridge operations.

All three had witnessed missing supplies, altered casualty records, or illegal billing.

They had been moved through private medical systems under false identities.

Daniel’s injuries from the convoy explosion were real but treatable.

His prolonged weakness came partly from medication he had never knowingly accepted.

The plane was secured.

The medical staff were questioned.

Blackridge executives claimed the transfer was part of a confidential recovery program for traumatized personnel.

The patients had supposedly consented.

Daniel’s signature appeared on the forms.

He recognized the mark.

He had signed a routine evacuation tablet immediately after the explosion.

The stored document was different.

The same signature technology had attached his approval to a guardianship agreement and overseas transfer.

He had survived the attack.

Paperwork had nearly completed what the explosion did not.
