The Call That Lasted Seven Seconds

Chapter 02 - The Call That Lasted Seven Seconds

Avery answered on speaker.

Static filled the hallway.

Then a man breathed once.

“Sarah?”

She gripped the table.

“Daniel?”

A mechanical voice interrupted.

“Connection terminated.”

The call ended after seven seconds.

Military technicians later determined that the signal came through an emergency satellite relay assigned to Blackridge Defense Logistics, the private contractor supporting Daniel’s convoy.

Blackridge reported that the relay had been destroyed in the fire.

The call proved something inside the official timeline was wrong.

Avery ordered the Mitchell house placed under protective observation. Sarah refused armed personnel inside, but agreed to two investigators outside and a secure line in the kitchen.

The memory card required a password.

Marcus knew Daniel’s field habits.

“He never used birthdays or service numbers.”

Noah turned the blue paper star over.

Three numbers were written on the back.

14-9-7.

Sarah recognized them.

The coordinates did not point to a place. They corresponded to letters.

N-I-G.

Daniel and Noah had a bedtime code. When Daniel traveled, he ended recorded stories with the phrase:

Night is not goodbye.

Sarah typed NIGHTISNOTGOODBYE.

The card opened.

The first file contained convoy-camera footage from two hours before the reported attack.

Daniel stood beside a fuel manifest arguing with a Blackridge supervisor named Grant Cole.

“These trucks are empty,” Daniel said. “You billed the Army for medical supplies that never arrived.”

Cole responded:

“You are outside your assignment.”

“My assignment is keeping people alive.”

A second file showed Daniel copying shipping records.

A third contained a message recorded after the explosion.

His face was bruised and dusty, but he was conscious.

“If this reaches Sarah, Blackridge altered the casualty list. I am being moved with two survivors. Do not trust any document signed by Colonel Avery until you know who gave him the source.”

Everyone in the kitchen looked at Avery.

The colonel removed his cap.

“I signed the notification order.”

Sarah’s voice became cold.

“Did you know it was false?”

May you like

“No.”

“Then prove it.”
