A Reunion with a Door Between Them

Chapter 06 - A Reunion with a Door Between Them

Daniel was taken to an independent military hospital.

Sarah and Noah arrived the following morning.

A trauma specialist explained that reunions after confinement and medication could overwhelm everyone involved.

Noah wanted to run into the room.

Sarah asked him to wait until Daniel was ready.

They first saw him through a glass panel.

Daniel sat upright in bed, thinner than before, his left arm supported in a sling.

Noah raised the blue-star walkie-talkie.

Daniel smiled and touched two fingers to his heart.

When the doctor opened the door, Noah stopped at the threshold.

“Dad?”

“Blue Star.”

The boy crossed the room.

Sarah remained near the doorway until Daniel looked at her and opened his hand.

She sat beside him.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

News crews gathered outside the hospital.

Military officials requested a public reunion statement.

Sarah refused.

Daniel’s survival belonged first to the family, not the institution that delivered a flag before verifying his death.

Later, Daniel asked where the flag was.

“At home,” Sarah said.

“Keep it.”

She looked at him.

“It was given because they said you were dead.”

“It also carried the truth home.”

The folded flag had become two things at once: an object of false mourning and the container Daniel used to challenge the lie.

The family would decide what it meant.

No public-relations office would decide for them.
