Vanessa Without A Last Name

Chapter 14 - Vanessa Without A Last Name
Vanessa left the Sterling mansion before her father’s arraignment.
Her mother called it betrayal. Friends called it damage control. Online strangers called every action fake. Vanessa packed two suitcases and moved into a small apartment near campus paid for with money from a job she had not yet started.
For the first time, her last name opened fewer doors than it closed.
Hawthorne placed her on disciplinary probation for harassing Eli. She accepted it. The student conduct board asked whether she believed the punishment was fair.
“No,” she said.
The panel looked surprised.
“It is lighter than what happens to poor students for smaller mistakes.”
She volunteered to testify about the scholarship foundation, donor influence, and her father’s security staff. She returned gifts purchased through diverted accounts. She sold the cream designer suit from the viral video and sent the money to the emergency student fund without attaching her name.
None of this made Eli owe her friendship.
They passed each other outside the engineering library weeks later. Vanessa stopped.
“How is your father?”
“Alive.”
“I heard.”
“He is learning who we are again.”
She nodded.
“I’m glad.”
Eli looked at her worn campus ID and ordinary coat.
“You don’t have to make yourself poor to prove you’re sorry.”
Vanessa almost smiled. “I’m not poor. I’m just discovering how expensive consequences are.”
“That sounds like something Professor Cole would assign.”
“I’m taking her ethics seminar.”
Eli laughed before he could stop himself.
Vanessa’s expression softened.
“I know the car wasn’t the important part,” she said. “But when it opened, I thought the universe had personally humiliated me.”
“It had help.”
She accepted the joke.
Then she became serious.
“My father kept files on other families. Other founders. Mara thinks there are more trusts he manipulated.”
Eli nodded. The investigation had already widened.
Vanessa handed him a storage key.
“This opens a private archive he thought nobody knew about.”
“Why give it to me?”
“Because I spent my whole life assuming everything behind his locks belonged to us.”

She walked away before he could respond.
For once, she did not wait for approval.
