Chapter 16 - Adrian Comes Home

Adrian left the facility in spring.

He did not return to a mansion or corporate headquarters. He chose the small apartment where Rachel and Eli had lived under another name. The stairs were difficult, the kitchen cramped, and every room contained years he had missed.

Rachel offered to move.

Adrian refused.

“I need to learn where you survived.”

His memory returned unevenly. He recognized machines before people, songs before dates. Sometimes he called Eli by the name of an old engineer. Sometimes he woke believing he was still in Room 417. Recovery required patience no company timeline could measure.

Eli took a semester away from Hawthorne.

They rebuilt small things together.

A broken toaster.

A bicycle hub.

An old radio from the thrift store downstairs.

Adrian’s hands shook, but when components aligned, his focus returned. He told Eli fragments of the crash. Grant’s vehicle following. A forced command entering the system. Waking beside the road. A man saying Rachel and Eli died in a house fire. Years of medication and false records.

One afternoon, Mara brought the red car to the apartment garage.

Adrian stood before it for a long time.

Eli offered the key.

His father shook his head.

“It’s yours.”

“You built it.”

“I built a door.”

Eli smiled. “You always did like metaphors after making fun of lawyers for them.”

Adrian laughed, a sound Rachel had not heard in eight years.

They opened the hidden archive together. Adrian placed his hand on the compass emblem, and the system recognized both father and son. A final folder appeared, one even Professor Cole had not accessed.

Its title used no words.

Only a small compass symbol.

Inside were designs for a low-cost battery platform Adrian intended to release through public licensing, preventing any single corporation from controlling it.

Grant had sabotaged the test partly to own that technology.

Adrian looked at Eli.

“What do we do with it?”

Eli thought of scholarship students, factory towns, and his father’s note.

“Open the door.”
