A Name The Campus Remembered

Chapter 04 - A Name The Campus Remembered
By sunset, the courtyard video had been viewed two million times.
The clip was only twenty seconds long: Vanessa’s cream suit, Chase’s laugh, Eli’s torn hoodie, the red car responding to his key. Online captions invented dialogue nobody heard and motives nobody understood. Some called Eli a secret billionaire. Others called the moment staged. Hawthorne students who had never spoken to him posted memories of “always knowing he was different.”
Eli hated all of it.
He parked the car inside the engineering garage and walked home through a service lane to avoid cameras. His mother was waiting in their small apartment with the television off and every curtain closed.
Rachel Carter Mercer did not ask whether he was all right.
She asked, “Did you open the car?”
“Yes.”
“Did anyone see the compass emblem?”
“Probably.”
She sat down slowly.
For eight years, Rachel had hidden Eli behind her maiden name. After Adrian Mercer’s crash, reporters surrounded their home, investors challenged the family trust, and strangers offered money for interviews about the brilliant founder’s final days. Then threats arrived. A brake line was cut on Rachel’s car. Someone entered Eli’s school using a fake custody document.
Rachel disappeared with her son before the funeral flowers wilted.
Grant Sterling became interim chief executive of Mercer Dynamics. Interim became permanent. Publicly, he honored Adrian’s legacy. Privately, he challenged Eli’s inheritance, claiming the boy’s trust could not activate without proof that Adrian’s original ownership key still existed.
The black fob was that proof.
“You should have waited for Mara,” Rachel said.
“She told me the car was coming.”
“She didn’t tell you to reveal your name in front of three hundred phones.”
“No,” Eli said. “Vanessa told me I belonged at the service entrance.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
He immediately regretted the sharpness in his voice.
She had spent years protecting him with fear as her only reliable map. But hiding had required Eli to accept humiliation, scholarships funded from money that might already belong to him, and a public history where his father’s work carried Grant Sterling’s signature.
A knock sounded.
Rachel froze.
Three precise knocks, a pause, then two.
She stood.
“That’s Mara.”
The attorney entered wearing a black wool coat and carrying a steel case. She looked at Eli, then at the key in his hand.
“The whole board knows you’re alive and on campus,” she said.
Eli swallowed. “Was that not the plan?”
Mara placed the case on the table.
“The plan was to reveal an heir.”
She opened it.
