The Scholarship Ledger

Chapter 08 - The Scholarship Ledger
The next attack came through paperwork.
At eight the next morning, Hawthorne suspended Eli’s scholarship pending verification of identity. His campus access card stopped working. The university claimed inconsistencies between his application as Eli Carter and his public statement as Elijah Mercer.
Grant Sterling called the decision routine.
Professor Cole called it retaliation.
Mara filed an emergency response. Rachel supplied sealed identity orders explaining the protected surname. Within hours, the university president reversed the suspension, but the damage exposed something larger.
Eli’s scholarship had been funded by the Mercer Future Engineers Program.
A foundation bearing his father’s name.
Grant Sterling controlled it.
Professor Cole requested the program’s internal ledgers. The university resisted until Vanessa delivered an access copy she had obtained from a donor portal. It showed millions diverted from student grants into consulting companies linked to Sterling executives.
Some scholarship recipients were real.
Others did not exist.
Eli sat in the engineering library surrounded by names that represented stolen chances. Students worked three jobs while money assigned to them paid for private flights and donor retreats.
“This is not only about my trust,” he said.
Mara nodded. “It never is.”
People willing to steal one life rarely stop at one victim.
Vanessa entered the library alone. She wore jeans and a dark sweater rather than the cream outfits that had become part of her public identity. Students stared. She accepted it.
She placed a printed image on the table: the Sterling security employee in the courtyard.
“He was there before the car arrived,” she said. “My father knew.”
Eli did not thank her.
She did not expect him to.
“I’m sorry for what I did,” Vanessa continued. “You don’t have to forgive me, answer me, or make me feel better. I just need the truth to be useful.”
Eli studied her.
“Why now?”
“Because I watched my father lie to me without blinking. Then I watched myself do the same thing to you in front of everyone.”
Professor Cole examined the image.
The guard held a device matching the tool dropped in the garage.
Vanessa looked at the scholarship ledger.
“My signature is on donor videos asking people to fund this program.”
Eli closed the file.
“Then help us tell the students where the money went.”
Outside the library, cameras waited.

This time, Vanessa did not step in front of Eli.
She stood beside the ledger.
