The Woman With The Steel Case

Chapter 05 - The Woman With The Steel Case

Mara Keene had been Adrian Mercer’s attorney, friend, and most frequent argument.

She believed contracts could prevent betrayal. Adrian believed people were better than their contracts. When Grant Sterling joined Mercer Dynamics as chief financial officer, Mara warned that his loyalty followed leverage. Adrian laughed, called her suspicious, and gave Grant another promotion.

After the crash, Mara stopped saying she had been right.

She spent eight years proving it.

The official report claimed Adrian lost control during a high-speed battery test. The car burned, identification depended on dental records, and the onboard data unit was never recovered. Grant testified that Adrian insisted on driving alone.

The photographs inside Mara’s case showed something else.

A second vehicle near the test route.

A maintenance hatch opened before impact.

A blurry figure wearing a Sterling Dynamics field jacket.

Eli stared.

“Why didn’t police see these?”

“They saw copies with three frames missing.”

“Who had the originals?”

“Your father’s car.”

Mara explained that Adrian developed an independent archive separate from the standard recorder. It stored encrypted telemetry inside a hidden compartment and unlocked only when paired with the original owner key.

The red supercar in Hawthorne’s garage was not the crashed test vehicle. It was Adrian’s personal car, built with the same archive architecture. Before his death, he transferred a backup file into its system.

Grant had spent years searching for it.

Rachel looked at the key.

“That’s why they wanted Eli found.”

Mara nodded.

The car was valuable, but the data inside could destroy control of a corporation worth billions. The trust recognized Eli as Adrian’s heir, yet Grant challenged the signature chain and kept the ownership dormant. If the archive contained Adrian’s final biometric authorization, Eli could claim voting control immediately.

Eli felt the apartment shrink around him.

Hours earlier, his greatest problem had been a cruel girl in a courtyard. Now that girl’s father might be connected to his own father’s death.

“What do we do?”

Mara closed the case.

“We retrieve the archive before Grant does.”

Rachel shook her head. “He will already have people at the university.”

Mara’s phone vibrated.

She checked the screen and went still.

“He does.”

Security cameras at Hawthorne had just gone offline.

Eli grabbed his coat.

Rachel caught his wrist.

“You are not going back alone.”

Eli looked at the woman who had sacrificed her name, career, and home to keep him alive.

“Then come with me.”

For the first time in eight years, Rachel Mercer stopped hiding.
