Vanessa’s Father Calls

Chapter 07 - Vanessa’s Father Calls

Grant Sterling called his daughter at 1:12 a.m.

Vanessa had not slept. The viral video played repeatedly on her phone even after she muted it. Commenters called her spoiled, cruel, and stupid. Some messages were deserved. Others threatened violence from strangers eager to perform morality in public.

Grant did not ask if she was safe.

He asked exactly what Eli said.

Vanessa repeated the name.

Elijah Adrian Mercer.

Silence filled the line.

“Dad?”

“Did he enter the car?”

“Yes.”

“Did he remove anything?”

“I don’t know.”

Grant’s voice hardened. “Think.”

Vanessa sat up.

Her father had always spoken of Adrian Mercer with polished sadness. A visionary lost too soon. A friend whose company Grant saved from collapse. Vanessa grew up attending memorial dinners beneath Adrian’s portrait. She never knew he had a son her age.

“You told me the Mercer child died.”

“I told you not to believe gossip.”

“No. You told me there was no heir.”

Grant changed tactics.

He said Eli was likely an impostor. He said dangerous people used old family stories to manipulate wealthy institutions. He warned Vanessa that the boy might approach her because of her access.

“He didn’t approach me,” she said. “I approached him.”

Another silence.

For the first time, she understood her father was frightened.

Not socially embarrassed.

Afraid.

Grant ordered her to leave campus and come home. Vanessa refused. He threatened to freeze her accounts. She laughed bitterly.

“Do it. Apparently I’ve spent years acting like money was a personality.”

She ended the call.

Across campus, Chase texted that university security wanted statements about the courtyard. Vanessa stared at the screen. She could repeat the easy story: Eli deceived them, the key reveal was staged, everyone misunderstood.

Or she could say what happened.

She had humiliated a stranger because his clothes gave her permission in her own mind.

The harder truth did not make her father innocent or Eli rich.

It made her responsible for herself.

Vanessa opened a blank message to Eli. She typed an apology, deleted it, typed again, and finally stopped.

An apology sent at one in the morning could become another attempt to control how the victim responded.

Instead, she saved the courtyard video from the original student who recorded it.

In the background, just before the red car arrived, a man in a Sterling security jacket could be seen speaking into a radio.

Vanessa enlarged the frame.

She knew him.

He worked directly for her father.
