Chase Learns To Carry Books

Chapter 18 - Chase Learns To Carry Books
Chase Dalton’s role in the courtyard humiliation was smaller than Vanessa’s and easier for him to deny.
He said he was joking. He said the clip removed context. He said nobody could have known Eli’s identity.
The conduct board asked why identity should have mattered.
Chase had no answer.
He lost his team captaincy for a semester and was assigned community work in the campus learning center. On his first day, Professor Cole handed him a cart stacked with engineering books.
“These go to the basement archive.”
He stared at the weight.
“Is this symbolic?”
“No,” she said. “The symbolic books are heavier.”
Chase carried them.
Over weeks, he met students who balanced sports, jobs, caregiving, and tuition gaps. He learned that one teammate sent half his stipend home. He learned the janitor he mocked held a civil-engineering degree not recognized in the United States. Shame became less theatrical and more useful.
Eli encountered him near the same courtyard where the video was filmed.
Chase held a stack of books against his chest.
“I suppose you’re going to say something clever.”
Eli considered it.
“Bend your knees when you lift.”
Chase laughed despite himself.
Then he apologized.
Not for failing to recognize a rich heir.
For enjoying the public humiliation of someone he believed had less power.
Eli accepted the apology without promising friendship.
The red car was visible through the engineering lab windows, raised on a hydraulic platform with its panels removed. It looked less glamorous, more honest.
Chase nodded toward it.
“Does it bother you that everybody thought the car proved your worth?”
“Yes.”
“What proved it?”
Eli shifted his backpack.
“Nothing in twelve seconds.”
Chase looked across the courtyard.
“That’s probably the lesson.”
“No,” Eli said. “The lesson is not to require proof before treating someone like a person.”

Chase carried the books inside.
This time, nobody laughed.
