Chapter 17 - The Board Falls

Grant Sterling’s trial lasted five months.

Charges included fraud, kidnapping, unlawful confinement, evidence tampering, embezzlement, and conspiracy. The prosecution did not need dramatic speeches. Records from the archive, hospital, scholarship foundation, and test vehicles formed a structure stronger than denial.

Several executives pleaded guilty and testified.

Hawthorne trustees resigned.

The university president admitted that donor pressure shaped admissions and discipline. An independent commission reviewed hundreds of cases. Students wrongly denied aid received compensation from assets seized from the Sterling foundation.

Grant maintained that everything he did protected Mercer Dynamics.

Adrian attended only one day of testimony.

When asked whether Grant had saved the company after the crash, Adrian answered, “He saved his position. The company survived the people who worked beneath him.”

Vanessa testified against her father.

He refused to look at her until the prosecutor displayed the campus video. There she stood in cream, mocking a boy whose inheritance Grant had stolen.

Grant finally turned.

“You became weak.”

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“No. I became visible to myself.”

The jury convicted him.

Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded Eli. They asked whether justice felt complete.

He looked toward Adrian, who stood with Rachel and used a cane on difficult days.

“No,” Eli said. “Complete would be getting the years back.”

That answer became the headline Grant’s publicists could not control.

The Mercer board voted to dissolve the executive structure that allowed one leader to dominate oversight. Employees gained elected representation. Scholarship funds moved into an independent trust. The low-cost battery platform was licensed openly, with revenue supporting public research and worker training.

Eli accepted a board seat but refused the chief executive title.

“I still have exams,” he said.

Professor Cole told him it was the first responsible excuse any Mercer had given.

The red car returned to Hawthorne, not as a display of wealth, but as a research vehicle in the engineering laboratory. Students took it apart under Adrian’s supervision.

A machine once used to guard a secret became a classroom.
