The Man Who Claimed to Be Family

Chapter 02 - The Man Who Claimed to Be Family

Derek reached for his phone.

Mason’s club brother, Isaiah Grant, stepped away from the next booth but kept his hands lowered.

“No one is trapping you here,” Isaiah said. “The door is open. The child stays where she feels safe until police arrive.”

Derek stared at the six leather vests around the diner.

“You think surrounding me makes this legal?”

Mason answered, “Calling the sheriff does.”

Diner owner June Miller locked the back office, saved the security footage, and brought Lucy a clean blanket. She did not ask the child for details. Mason had spent years volunteering with missing-child searches and knew repeated questioning could damage both a child and an investigation.

Derek tried a different approach.

He showed a photograph on his phone: himself, Emma, and Lucy standing beside a Christmas tree.

“See? I am family.”

Lucy looked away.

A family photograph proved proximity.

It did not prove safety.

Deputy Serena Ortiz arrived with a child-services advocate and an emergency medical technician. Derek presented temporary guardianship papers stating Emma had abandoned the family and Lucy suffered from anxiety-related wandering.

Serena examined the signature.

The guardianship order had been issued that morning.

The supporting report described Lucy’s disappearance from home at 2:00 p.m.

It was only 12:17.

The report documented an incident that had not happened yet.

Derek blamed a clerical error.

Mason watched his eyes rather than his words.

The dark-haired man kept glancing toward Lucy’s left sneaker.

Serena noticed too.

She asked Lucy whether anyone had told her to carry something.

The child hesitated.

Then she removed the shoe with the missing lace.

Inside the sole was a flat brass key and a folded strip of waterproof paper.

Emma’s handwriting covered it.

Mason,

I was wrong to keep Lucy from you. Derek discovered the Northstar records. If I disappear, the clinic at White Quarry is not abandoned. Do not trust documents signed after March 8.

The note ended with coordinates.

Derek took one step backward.

Serena said, “Please remain here.”

He ran.

He reached the parking lot before the Grey Wolves moved.

They did not chase him with fists.

Isaiah photographed the license plate.

June locked the diner footage.

Mason stayed beside Lucy.

The child had already watched too many adults choose the fleeing man over the frightened girl.

Mason would not become another one.
