The Recorder Sewn into the Rabbit

Chapter 06 - The Recorder Sewn into the Rabbit
Lucy had carried no phone.
Derek’s household rules prohibited devices in her room.
She carried a stuffed rabbit named Blue.
At the hospital, Emma asked for it.
A nurse found the toy inside the backpack recovered at the clinic.
Emma opened a seam beneath one ear and removed a miniature audio recorder.
Before her confinement, she taught Lucy to press the rabbit’s paw whenever Derek spoke about papers, medicine, or “Mom going away.”
The recordings contained weeks of conversations.
Derek instructing Renner to increase Emma’s sedative before a board call.
Derek telling an attorney to prepare abandonment papers.
A clinic employee asking whether Lucy would be placed with him.
Derek answering:
“Only until the sale. After that, a residential school will solve the problem.”
Another recording captured Lucy asking where her mother was.
Derek said Emma chose money over her.
The child answered, “Mom doesn’t leave without Blue.”
That sentence made him search the toy.
Lucy had already moved the recorder beneath the ear and replaced the original battery compartment with stones.
A seven-year-old should not have needed counter-surveillance skills.
