Why Emma Left the Wolves

Chapter 04 - Why Emma Left the Wolves

Emma was eighteen when she left Mason.

Her mother died in a highway collision, and grief turned every conversation between father and daughter into an argument about danger.

Mason wanted Emma to remain near the Grey Wolves clubhouse, where people watched every door and knew every car.

Emma wanted college, privacy, and a life where strangers did not assume she belonged to a biker before learning her name.

Their final argument was cruel on both sides.

Mason called her ungrateful.

Emma said she would rather have no father than one who treated protection like ownership.

She left the next morning.

Years became distance.

Mason sent birthday cards to old addresses.

Emma returned none.

She built Northstar Freight Analytics, a software company that helped independent truckers negotiate fuel prices and routes. She married Derek after meeting him at an investment conference.

When Lucy was born, Emma considered contacting Mason.

Derek discouraged it.

He said motorcycle clubs attracted scrutiny and risk.

Emma allowed shame to help him.

By the time she understood Derek was isolating her deliberately, he controlled her email, legal calendar, and most access to the company.

The pendant remained hidden.

She told Lucy about the gray wolf only as an emergency story.

“If anyone says I left you,” Emma taught her, “find the wolf. He will be angry, but he will believe you.”

Lucy asked why a good man would be angry.

“Because good people can hurt one another and still be the people who answer.”
