The White Building

Chapter 03 - The White Building

White Quarry Clinic stood twenty-eight miles north of the diner.

Officially, it had closed after losing its medical license. Its windows were boarded, its sign removed, and the county property file listed the building as empty.

The coordinates in Emma’s note led to a service entrance hidden behind cedar trees.

Sheriff’s deputies entered with a warrant.

Mason waited outside with Lucy and the child advocate. He wanted to search for Emma himself, but wanting access did not make it safe or lawful.

An ambulance arrived nine minutes later.

Emma Cole-Shaw was found inside a locked recovery room on the lower level. She was dehydrated, sedated, and weak, but alive.

Lucy saw the stretcher and tried to run toward it.

The advocate asked the paramedics first.

When they agreed, Mason carried the child close enough for Emma to see her.

Emma opened her eyes.

“Wolf,” she whispered.

Mason had rehearsed their reunion in anger for twenty-six years.

He imagined demanding explanations, asking why she changed her name, and telling her how many birthdays he had missed.

Instead, he touched her hand.

“I found her.”

Emma looked at Lucy.

“I knew you would.”

Inside the clinic, investigators found medical restraints, unlabeled medicine bottles, surveillance equipment, and a laptop containing guardianship templates.

The patient log listed Emma under another name.

Her chart claimed she suffered paranoid delusions about her husband stealing company money.

She had never been admitted voluntarily.

The clinic was not treating illness.

It was manufacturing legal incapacity.
