The Board Outside Maternity

Chapter 10 - The Board Outside Maternity

Hospital directors gathered outside the maternity floor before sunrise.

They demanded access to Ethan.

Lena refused.

“This is a clinical unit, not a boardroom.”

The directors held an emergency meeting in the cafeteria.

Employees filled the rear tables.

Margaret presented the original ledger.

Ortiz presented the duplicated wristbands.

Dr. Chen presented the unsafe induction order.

Evelyn presented the printed records she carried through the laundry corridor.

Small acts by people executives rarely noticed had preserved the case.

The board suspended Ethan, Richard, Paul, and Dr. Cole.

An independent administrator assumed control.

Ethan asked Rachel to meet him privately.

She allowed Lena to remain.

“I panicked,” he said. “The trust was disappearing.”

“You locked your pregnant wife outside a delivery room.”

“I thought Celeste would deliver quickly. Then I would correct everything.”

“You keep calling permanent harm temporary.”

Ethan said he loved Rachel.

She believed he felt something he called love.

It had not stopped him from taking her phone, forging her consent, or preparing to declare her incompetent.

“Love that requires my legal silence is not love I can live inside.”

She removed her wedding ring.

Ethan looked at it for a long time.

Then hospital security escorted him away from the maternity floor he once believed he owned.
