The Bag on the Roof

Chapter 07 - The Bag on the Roof

Paul reached the roof before police sealed the stairwell.

A helicopter waited with its engine running.

Inside sat Richard Hale, Ethan’s father and chairman emeritus of the hospital group.

Richard had not appeared in public for three years.

He stepped from the aircraft using a cane and ordered Paul to hand him the bag.

Detective Ortiz emerged onto the roof.

“Put it down.”

Richard smiled.

“You are standing on private property.”

“You are holding evidence from a criminal investigation.”

Ethan followed the officers.

He looked at Richard.

“Tell me Margaret is lying.”

Richard did not.

He said Joanna Ward had been unable to care for a child and Caroline gave Ethan every advantage.

“That is not an answer,” Ethan said.

“It is the only history that matters.”

Celeste, watching through the rooftop camera feed, began to cry.

Richard treated her existence as an administrative inconvenience.

Paul moved toward the helicopter.

Lena activated the old fire-safety override from the nurses’ station. Steel barriers rose around the helipad, preventing takeoff.

Samuel had designed the system after an executive once tried to remove records during an investigation.

Richard looked toward the camera.

“Still protecting dead men’s rules, Nurse Ortiz?”

“No,” Lena replied through the speaker. “Protecting living patients.”

Police recovered the bag.

Inside were the original birth ledger, the maternity camera recorder, and an unsigned court petition declaring Rachel mentally incompetent.

Ethan had prepared the petition two weeks earlier.

If filed, he would become her legal guardian.

He could control her medical decisions, the child’s identity, and the trust claim.

Rachel read the document from her bed.
