The Nurse Who Kept Copies

Chapter 04 - The Nurse Who Kept Copies

Lena had worked at Saint Catherine’s for nineteen years.

She knew every policy Ethan’s executives ignored and every staff member they expected to remain silent.

She also knew the hospital’s old paper systems.

Before Paul could block the network, Lena printed both admission files, the duplicate wristbands, medication orders, and biometric logs.

She gave one copy to Dr. Chen.

Another went inside the locked newborn-safety cabinet.

A third she handed to night custodian Evelyn Brooks.

“Take the service stairs,” Lena whispered. “Find Detective Ortiz.”

Evelyn hid the pages beneath clean linens and left through the laundry corridor.

Paul discovered the missing printouts within minutes.

He ordered security to search staff bags.

Lena stood between him and the nurses’ station.

“You do not search employees without consent or a warrant.”

“This hospital belongs to the Hale family.”

“Patient records do not.”

Rachel watched workers gather behind Lena.

Respiratory therapists.

Orderlies.

A laboratory technician.

Two nurses from pediatrics.

The family owned the building.

They did not own every person inside it.

Celeste was transferred to another room under her real identity. Dr. Chen confirmed she was not yet ready to deliver. The induction had been started too early to satisfy the trust deadline.

Ethan paced outside.

Rachel noticed a small camera above Delivery Suite Four.

Lena said it was not connected to modern security.

Samuel Hale had installed independent recorders after a medication scandal twenty years earlier.

The camera footage might show who placed Celeste in Rachel’s bed and who authorized the false admission.

Paul claimed the archive had been removed.

Evelyn knew otherwise.

The old recorder was hidden in the chapel wall.

And the only key belonged to Samuel’s former chief nurse—Rachel’s mother, Margaret Ellis.

Margaret had supposedly died twelve years earlier.
