Celeste requested a private interview with Detective Ortiz.
She admitted that Ethan approached her fourteen months earlier.
He said Rachel was infertile and had agreed to a confidential surrogate arrangement to protect the Hale family from press attention.
Ethan paid for Celeste’s apartment, medical care, and silence.
He also resumed their romantic relationship.
Celeste chose to believe him because the arrangement made every selfish decision sound generous.
Two weeks earlier, she overheard Richard discussing the trust deadline.
That was when she learned the planned birth certificate would name Rachel.
She threatened to leave.
Paul took her passport and moved her into a hotel owned by the family.
The induction was not voluntary.
Ethan claimed it was medically necessary.
Dr. Chen reviewed the orders.
They were signed by a physician who had not examined Celeste.
The doctor, Steven Cole, admitted Richard threatened to expose an old billing violation unless he cooperated.
Celeste agreed to testify.
Rachel met her in a quiet consultation room.
Neither woman knew what apology could cover.
Celeste spoke first.
“I believed what allowed me to keep him.”
Rachel answered, “And he believed both of us could be rewritten.”
Celeste asked whether Rachel hated her.
“Yes,” Rachel said honestly. “But not enough to let them erase you too.”
The two women did not become friends.
