Chapter 01 - Five Minutes Before

Five minutes before Andre Brooks appeared in the doorway, Maya still believed she could keep the night from becoming a disaster.

She had opened the hotel-suite door because Evelyn Hart had smiled with professional calm and lifted a folder as if paperwork made her harmless. “Just a signature packet,” Evelyn said. “Andre wanted it left here before morning.”

Maya was exhausted. At seven and a half months pregnant, exhaustion lived behind her eyes, in her back, in the slow way she turned toward sounds. The suite was supposed to be a quiet place while their apartment was under renovation. Warm lamp light, white bed, city lights, soft curtains. A safe room above the noise.

But Evelyn carried tension in with her.

She did not hand over the folder. She set it on the marble bedside table beside Maya’s black phone and began looking around the room, inspecting the bed, the carpet, the window, as if measuring what did not belong to her yet.

“You look worn down,” Evelyn said.

“I’m pregnant,” Maya answered. “That happens.”

Evelyn’s smile barely moved. “Stress can make women misread things.”

Maya felt the old chill. For weeks, Evelyn had used soft words like blades: emotional, fragile, overwhelmed, sensitive. Always gentle enough that Andre could mistake cruelty for concern.

Maya reached toward the bedside table, pretending to steady herself. Her thumb touched the phone. One tap. The screen stayed dark. The recording began silently.

Evelyn did not notice.

She stepped closer, rust-orange satin catching the lamplight. “Andre needs calm around him right now. Not fear. Not suspicion. Not a wife who turns every business decision into a test of loyalty.”

Maya’s hand moved to her belly. “You don’t get to talk about my marriage.”

Evelyn looked down at the gesture, then back at Maya’s face.

“No,” she said softly. “I came to talk about influence.”

Maya understood then. Evelyn had not come to deliver papers.

She had come to create evidence.
