The Woman in Rust Orange

Chapter 02 - The Woman in Rust Orange

Evelyn Hart had built her life by becoming necessary to powerful men.

She was not loud about it. Loud women were dismissed too easily in the circles Evelyn wanted to command. She made herself polished, precise, and quietly indispensable. She knew what time Andre preferred morning briefings, which reporters could be trusted, which board members needed flattery, and which scandals could be buried if handled before sunrise.

Andre Brooks was her greatest project.

When she met him, he was brilliant but rough-edged, a logistics founder with more instinct than polish. Evelyn gave him language. She shaped his public image, softened his anger for interviews, sharpened his compassion for donors, protected him from rivals, and slowly moved close enough that no major decision passed without her shadow on it.

Then Maya married him.

At first, Evelyn did not worry. Maya seemed warm, private, uninterested in power. But that was exactly what made her dangerous. She did not compete with Evelyn; she simply existed in a place Evelyn could not enter.

Andre changed around his wife.

He ended calls early. He stopped answering messages at dinner. He began questioning whether company staff should have access to personal schedules. When Maya became pregnant, he told Evelyn he wanted clearer boundaries between work and family.

Boundaries.

The word felt insulting.

Evelyn had not survived six years of corporate war to be pushed outside by a woman in soft dresses who said “I’m tired” and made Andre rearrange his life.

So Evelyn began building another version of Maya.

Maya was unstable. Maya was possessive. Maya was struggling emotionally. Maya might become a reputational risk during the acquisition. Evelyn never said these things with venom. She said them with concern, which made them easier for people to repeat.

Tonight, Evelyn wanted a final piece.

A recording of Maya losing control would be useful. A witness statement would be better. A frightened pregnant wife on a carpet beside a stain would be enough if Evelyn reached Andre first.

She believed she could still control the room.

She did not understand that the black phone beside the lamp was already listening.
