Grace

Chapter 16 - Grace
Their daughter arrived five weeks early, just before sunrise.
Maya was frightened, of course. Birth is never fully under anyone’s command, no matter how many plans are printed. But this time, the fear did not become loneliness.
Andre stood where Maya asked him to stand. He spoke when she needed his voice and stayed quiet when she needed space. He did not call the company. He did not ask anyone to manage the announcement. He did not let a single adviser into the hospital conversation.
Grace Amara Brooks entered the world angry, loud, and perfect.
When the nurse placed her against Maya’s chest, Maya cried so hard she could barely see her daughter’s face. Grace’s tiny cheek pressed against her skin. Her hand opened and closed like she was already making demands.
“She has opinions,” Maya whispered.
Andre laughed through tears. “Good.”
The word carried a promise.
Good if she cried.
Good if she refused.
Good if she grew up with a voice too strong for polite manipulation.
Later, when Grace slept safely beside them, Maya asked for her phone to be placed on the bedside table.
Andre did it without question.
The screen stayed dark.
It was not recording.
It did not need to.
Maya looked at it and realized she did not want to live forever beside proof. She wanted a life where truth could enter the room without dragging evidence behind it.
Grace made a tiny sound in her sleep.
May you like
Maya touched her daughter’s blanket.
“That starts now,” she whispered.
