Maya’s Line

Chapter 03 - Maya’s Line
Maya had tried to tell Andre before.
Not once. Many times. At breakfast, after board dinners, in hotel elevators, during late-night calls when Evelyn’s name came up too often. She told him Evelyn spoke differently when he left the room. She told him staff acted as if Evelyn had authority over things no employee should touch. She told him she felt watched.
Andre never mocked her.
That almost made it worse.
He listened with a serious face, asked for examples, requested dates, wanted exact wording. He thought he was being fair. Maya felt like she was testifying.
“Maybe she’s just intense,” he said once.
“She is intense toward me,” Maya answered.
Andre looked tired that night. “Maya, I need specifics.”
So Maya stopped bringing it up.
Now Evelyn stood in the hotel suite turning those unspoken fears into furniture.
“You’re isolating him,” Evelyn said.
Maya stared at her. “I’m his wife.”
“Yes,” Evelyn replied. “And that is what makes this delicate.”
The baby shifted under Maya’s palm. The movement steadied her. She was not alone in her body anymore. Every choice carried another life, and Evelyn knew it. That was why she spoke softly, why she stepped close, why she wanted Maya to shout first.
Maya looked at the phone without moving her head.
Still dark. Still flat on the marble beside the lamp.
“Say clearly what you mean,” Maya said.
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, as if she disliked being asked to leave shadows.
“I mean Andre cannot afford to make emotional decisions because you are pregnant.”
“Emotional decisions like protecting his family?”
“Emotional decisions like letting you limit who has access to him.”
Maya’s voice trembled, but she did not raise it. “You do not have a right to my husband, my child, or this room.”
May you like
For the first time, Evelyn’s smile hardened.
“Then prove you can handle being in it.”
