The Silent Witness

Chapter 06 - The Silent Witness
The phone said nothing, and that was its power.
It lay flat on the marble bedside table beside the warm lamp, dark and unreadable, reflecting only a thin line of gold light. It looked ordinary enough that Evelyn had ignored it. Ordinary objects often become dangerous when cruel people forget they exist.
Andre saw the truth in its silence.
Maya had placed it there because she believed words alone would not save her. She had turned it on because he had taught her, unintentionally but clearly, that feelings needed evidence before they could become facts.
That realization struck him harder than Evelyn’s presence.
He had made his wife collect proof in her own room.
His suitcase lowered to the floor near the open door. The small sound made Evelyn flinch.
“Andre,” she said, “this is not what it looks like.”
He did not answer her.
He moved toward Maya first. Slowly. Carefully. He crouched beside her without touching too quickly, because her whole body looked braced for another person deciding what she needed.
“Are you hurt?” he asked.
Maya shook her head. “It spilled. I’m okay. I just…”
Her voice broke.
Evelyn stepped forward. “She is manipulating this.”
Andre looked up.
“I wasn’t talking to you.”
The room changed.
For six years, Evelyn had been the voice that explained pressure, strategy, optics, risk. She had spoken over assistants, investors, reporters, and sometimes Maya. Andre had allowed it because competence can disguise possession.
Now her voice stopped at the edge of his anger.
Maya reached for his sleeve with trembling fingers.
“She wanted me to scream,” she whispered.
Andre looked at the phone again.
May you like
This time, he asked, “May I?”
Maya nodded.
