An Apology Without Performance

Chapter 14 - An Apology Without Performance
Andre apologized properly three days later.
Not in the heat of discovery. Not while Maya was shaking. Not as a way to move past the discomfort quickly.
He waited until she had eaten, slept, spoken to her doctor, and decided she was ready for a real conversation.
Then he sat across from her with no phone, no laptop, no legal folder.
“I am sorry I made you prove what I should have noticed,” he said. “I am sorry I confused Evelyn’s usefulness with trustworthiness. I am sorry I let her stand too close to our marriage. I am sorry you needed that phone.”
Maya listened quietly.
The apology was clear.
It was also not magic.
“Do you know what hurt the most?” she asked.
Andre shook his head.
“When I told you something felt wrong, you asked for examples like I was making a business case.”
He looked down.
“I thought I was being fair.”
“You were making me audition for belief.”
The sentence stayed in the air between them.
Andre closed his eyes briefly. “I don’t want to do that again.”
“Wanting is not enough.”
“I know.”
Maya watched him.
He looked tired, guilty, and stripped of the confidence that once made every problem seem solvable by strategy. Good. Some things should humble a man before they heal him.
Maya placed one hand over her belly.
“Our daughter needs a father who listens before evidence arrives.”
Andre nodded.
“She will have one.”
May you like
Maya hoped he was right.
Hope was not trust, but it was the first brick.
