The Door Closes

Chapter 08 - The Door Closes

Evelyn tried three different masks before she left.

First came professionalism. “Andre, the acquisition cannot absorb an emotional personnel crisis tonight.”

“Leave.”

Then concern. “You’re reacting because she’s pregnant and distressed.”

“Leave.”

Then the truth, sharp and ugly beneath the silk. “You are choosing her over everything we built.”

Andre’s eyes hardened. “I am choosing my family over your access to it.”

That sentence ended more than the argument.

Evelyn stared at him as if he had struck the foundation out from under her life. She looked toward the bedside table, but the black phone remained beyond her reach. She looked toward Maya, perhaps searching for weakness. Maya was still crying, still shaken, still low beside the bed, but she was no longer alone.

Evelyn collected her folder from the marble table. Her fingers trembled once near the phone.

Andre noticed.

“Leave it,” he said.

“My folder?”

“We will request copies through counsel.”

Now Evelyn understood that the night had become documentation.

She walked toward the door with careful posture, but her control had cracks. The suitcase stood near the threshold where Andre had dropped it. She stepped around it as though it had insulted her.

When the door closed behind her, Maya began crying harder.

Andre turned immediately, but stopped himself before touching her.

“What do you need?” he asked.

Maya looked at him, exhausted.

“I need not to explain why that hurt.”

Andre lowered his head.

“You don’t have to.”

The words were small. Late. Not enough.

But they were the first correct ones he had said all night.
