The Messages

Chapter 11 - The Messages
Evelyn’s first message arrived at 7:12 a.m.
Last night was emotional. We should discuss it with clarity.
Andre showed Maya without being asked.
The second message came six minutes later.
Removing me during acquisition week would create unnecessary instability.
The third was colder.
You are letting Maya turn a private concern into a corporate risk.
Maya read that one twice, then handed the phone back.
“She’s still doing it,” Maya said.
Andre nodded. “Yes.”
Evelyn’s fourth message arrived while they were sitting in silence.
You are choosing her over everything we built.
Maya laughed once. There was no humor in it.
“Everything we built,” she repeated.
Andre looked sick. “She means the company.”
“No,” Maya said. “She means access.”
He could not argue.
For years, Evelyn had blurred the difference between protecting his work and owning his attention. She had wrapped control in competence until even Andre stopped seeing the line.
“What are you going to do?” Maya asked.
“Remove her from household access immediately. Suspend her company authority pending investigation. Preserve communications. Notify the board.”
“She’ll make me sound unstable.”
Andre looked directly at her. “Then I will correct it.”
“In private?”
“If needed, in public.”
Maya studied him.
This was the man she had needed months ago. The tragedy was that he had arrived only after a recording did.
Still, he was here now.
That had to count for something.

Not everything.
Something.
