Rachel’s Last Calculation
Chapter 10 - Rachel’s Last Calculation
Aurelia’s return authenticated Evelyn’s calculations.
The scientific community corrected the discovery credit within days:
AURELIA COMET
DISCOVERED BY SAMUEL HART
ORBIT CALCULATED BY DR. EVELYN HART
Arthur Ward’s name was removed from the official designation.
Celeste called the correction “premature.”
Then Rachel’s program completed a second process.
While tracking the comet, it connected to an old satellite archive outside Halcyon’s network. Rachel had stored encrypted evidence there before her death.
The archive contained emails between Celeste and a technology contractor discussing “vehicle correction.”
One message included Rachel’s license plate.
Another said:
THE HART DAUGHTER WILL NOT REACH THE HEARING.
Noah read the sentence before adults could stop him.
He closed the laptop and walked outside.
Evelyn found him on the academy steps.
“She knew she might die,” he said.
“Yes.”
“And she left me anyway.”
“She tried to make a world where you would be safer.”
“That does not make her less gone.”
“No.”
Evelyn sat beside him.
For decades, adults in their family had turned love into secrecy. Each believed silence protected the next generation. Each left someone younger carrying unanswered pain.
“I should have told you everything I knew,” Evelyn said.
“You did not know Grandpa was alive.”
“I knew enough to tell you your mother was brave and frightened. Instead, I let you think her crash was random because randomness seemed easier.”
Noah looked at her.
“Was it easier?”
“For me.”
She did not ask him to forgive her immediately.
Detective Ortiz arrested Celeste for conspiracy, evidence destruction, and obstruction. Additional charges related to Rachel’s death required federal review.
Conrad accepted a cooperation agreement.
He admitted falsifying Samuel’s deed and disciplinary records.
He also revealed that Arthur Ward did not die naturally.
Celeste had discovered he planned to confess after Rachel found Samuel.
Arthur’s final medical treatment was supervised by Celeste’s private physician.
The Ward family’s crimes had begun before Celeste inherited them.
She chose to continue.
Noah watched police remove her through the same gymnasium where she humiliated Evelyn.
Celeste looked toward the brass star map.

“You think that object gives your family ownership of Halcyon.”
Evelyn replied, “No. It gave us a direction.”
