Chapter 09 - Four Seventeen in the Morning

Students gathered outside Halcyon before dawn.

They carried handmade signs:

LET THE TELESCOPE FINISH.

SCIENCE DOES NOT FEAR EVIDENCE.

WHO OWNS THE SKY?

Parents joined them. Former students arrived with copies of rejected research. Reporters broadcast from the academy gates.

Celeste ordered security to clear the crowd.

The guards refused.

At 3:52 a.m., demolition workers started the hydraulic cutter.

Evelyn stood in front of the sealed observatory wall.

“You will have to move me.”

Celeste approached in a dark coat.

“You have turned children against their school.”

“No. You taught them what the school does to inconvenient questions.”

The cutter moved closer.

Noah crawled beneath the exhibition stage through an old ventilation passage. Sophie followed carrying a laptop.

They reached the observatory’s lower service tunnel.

Inside, the telescope tracking motor struggled against the steel seal placed over the roof.

Sophie connected her software.

Noah inserted the brass star map into the control console.

The system recognized three names:

SAMUEL HART.

EVELYN HART.

RACHEL HART.

A fourth line appeared.

CONTINUATION AUTHORIZED: NOAH HART.

At 4:09, Celeste discovered the children were missing.

She entered the observatory with two trustees.

Evelyn, Samuel, Lena, and Marcus followed through the main doors after workers stopped the cutter.

Celeste reached for the emergency shutdown.

Noah blocked her.

“You stole my mother’s work too.”

“She had no work worth stealing.”

Marcus activated Rachel’s recovered program.

The screen filled with satellite calculations.

Rachel had identified secret military objects hidden in Halcyon’s research network. Her code also contained the real cause of her car crash: remote interference with the vehicle’s navigation system from an academy server.

The access account belonged to Celeste.

Celeste stared at the screen.

“That proves only someone used my credentials.”

The clock reached 4:16.

The roof seal remained closed.

Samuel and Marcus turned the manual wheel together.

Metal screamed.

A narrow opening appeared above the telescope.

At 4:17, blue light entered the dome.

The monitor displayed a moving point against the stars.

Aurelia had returned exactly where Evelyn predicted twenty-five years earlier.

The system compared the observation with her original equations.

MATCH CONFIRMED: 99.9998%.

The room erupted.

Celeste pressed the shutdown button.

Nothing happened.

Samuel had built the final minute beyond administrative control.

For once, the evidence did not need permission to finish speaking.
