The Room Behind the Wall

Chapter 02 - The Room Behind the Wall

No one moved until the hidden steel doors stopped opening.

The old observatory had been sealed behind the gymnasium for twenty-five years. Dust covered the floor, but the telescope’s control panel glowed as though someone had used it that morning.

Celeste recovered first.

“Everyone step back. This area may be unsafe.”

She handed the brass star map to a security guard.

Evelyn reached for it.

“It opened the room. It stays with me.”

Celeste blocked her.

“You are a custodian, Mrs. Hart. You have no authority over academy property.”

Noah stood beside his grandmother.

“She has more authority than you think.”

The boy pointed toward the wall inside the observatory.

A bronze plaque had been uncovered as the doors opened.

HALCYON OBSERVATORY

FOUNDED BY SAMUEL AND EVELYN HART

1989

Guests began reading it aloud.

Celeste’s face tightened.

The academy’s official history credited Arthur Ward as the sole founder.

Dr. Marcus Reed, Halcyon’s current physics chairman, entered the observatory with a flashlight. He examined the telescope, wiring, and control console.

“This equipment should not have power,” he said. “The electrical line was removed after the fire.”

Evelyn looked at the brass map in the guard’s hands.

“Samuel built an independent battery system. The map contains the activation key.”

Celeste turned sharply.

“How do you know?”

“Because I designed the mechanism with him.”

A reporter raised her phone.

“You were an astronomer?”

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

She had earned a doctorate in celestial mechanics before Noah’s mother was born. After the observatory fire, Halcyon revoked her research credentials, accused her of assisting Samuel’s alleged fraud, and forced her from academic work.

For twenty-five years, biographies referred to her only as “the wife of the disgraced astronomer.”

Celeste ordered the livestream stopped.

The school’s technology director tried.

The hidden observatory had connected itself to every screen in the gymnasium.

Samuel’s recorded comet observation continued playing.

A timestamp appeared.

October 14, 1999—six weeks before Arthur Ward claimed to have discovered Aurelia.

The room erupted in whispers.

Celeste took the star map from the guard.

“This device could contain fabricated data.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“My husband predicted you would say that.”

She pressed a small engraved star near the map’s edge.

A drawer opened beneath the telescope console.

Inside were three sealed film canisters, a leather notebook, and a red envelope addressed to:

EVELYN—WHEN THE WARDS TRY TO ERASE THE SKY.

Celeste stared at her family name.

Then the observatory lights went out.

A second later, someone screamed from inside the darkness.

When emergency lights activated, the red envelope was gone.

So was Celeste.
