Rachel Sky

Chapter 15 - Rachel Sky

The Rachel Sky platform launched on the anniversary of Rachel’s death.

Thousands of classrooms connected to public telescopes across the country. Students could compare observations, flag anomalies, and receive automatic authorship records.

Noah gave the opening presentation.

He stood beneath the same paper planets from the gala, preserved by students as part of the new annual exhibition.

“My mother believed access to the sky should not depend on whether a school was rich,” he said. “She also believed every discovery should remember who made it.”

Evelyn watched from the back.

Samuel sat beside her.

Sophie activated the network.

On screens across the gymnasium, telescopes opened in twelve states.

Within minutes, students detected a faint object beyond Mars.

Its orbit did not match any cataloged asteroid.

Evelyn checked the calculations.

It was real.

Noah insisted the discovery be credited to the entire classroom network rather than to him.

The system recorded every contributing student.

They named the object Rachel-1.

That evening, Evelyn entered the hidden observatory alone.

She found Samuel at the telescope.

“I remember the night we built the map,” he said.

She waited.

“You said brass was too heavy.”

“It was.”

“You wanted aluminum.”

“It would have bent.”

“You were right.”

“That may be your most important recovered memory.”

He laughed.

The sound belonged to the man she remembered.

Samuel took out their old wedding rings. His had remained in a locked box at Cobalt Ridge. Evelyn still wore hers on a chain.

“I cannot ask you to return to the marriage we lost.”

“No.”

“Would you consider beginning another one?”

Evelyn looked through the telescope at Rachel-1.

“Ask me after we finish calibrating.”

Samuel smiled.

May you like

It was not a yes.

It was not another disappearance.
